In its second year for 2023, Women’s Cycling Ulster have delivered a successful ‘Women on Wheels’ programme, introducing 28 Women to off-road cycling.

5 female Coaches in 5 different locations ran the sessions covering Bike checks, Skills and a Bike ride.

As well as covering ‘M’ checks, to check the components on the bike were in working order, we went over what riders would ideally have with them to complete any trail-side maintenance.

I am glad we covered this so early on, as it meant we were prepared for the puncture and the broken chain in the group.

Week 1 was all about movement on the bike and getting used to pushing the bike away from the mid-line as well as moving the body forward and backwards on the bike.

Some of the skills practised over the weeks were cornering, front wheel lifts, track stands and rear wheel lifts.

It was great to see the progression weekly and the excitement on faces when the front wheel lifted, in full-on wheelie style.

Thanks to the clubs for offering the courses in conjunction with Women’s Cycling Ulster.

Well done Carn Wheelers, Apollo Cycling Club, The Feel Good Factor, Gortin MTB and Belfast City BMX Club.
