Ulster cyclists raise over £200,000 for local charities in 2023

Cyclists across the region worked hard in 2023 to raise much needed funds for local charities.

Each year there are numerous charity sportives and challenges organised by local cycling clubs in each County. Cyclists travel the length and breadth of the region to cycle new roads, share their love of cycling and support clubs with their fundraising efforts.

This year the Cycling Ulster Leisure Commission asked for members to report on their charitable activities to bring together everyone’s phenomenal efforts.

This has resulted in over £200,000 being donated to charities including NI Air Ambulance, Cure Leukaemia, MS Society, Friends of Cancer Care and the NI Cancer Fund for Children to name but a few.

Joanna Gray, chair of the Cycling Ulster Leisure Commission voiced her “thanks to members for continuing to volunteer their time to raise much needed funds for charity especially in light of reduced numbers of volunteers and fundraising following the pandemic. Charities are under severe pressure to keep their doors open, especially those that are more localised, and commented on the importance of their services to local communities.”

Tommy McCague, chair of Cycling Ulster, added his “thanks to clubs and their members for their part in raising this incredible amount that will be put to good use to help support those in greatest need in local communities. These charities are the life blood of our communities and need all the help they can get. I’d also like to thank the leisure commission for collating everyone’s efforts and look forward to continuing this excellent work in 2024.”

Clubs are already planning events in 2024. Further details can be located on the cyclingireland.ie calendar.
