Due to recent concerns in relation to clubs attempting to organise competitive events at weekends, the Cycling Ulster Executive wish to remind all clubs and members that “club and league races” can only be organised on Monday to Thursday. Any clubs who wish to organise a competitive event on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday can only do so if it is for a defined group such as Masters or Women who have a Limited Competition licence, otherwise it must be sanctioned by Cycling Ireland as an open competition and those taking part must have a Cycling Ireland Full Competition licence.

Assistant Secretary of Cycling Ulster, Patrick Withers stated “We are aware that there are new clubs and new members taking on organising events due to the continued growth of the sport, it is important that they familiarise themselves with the Cycling Ireland Technical Regulations. The Cycling Ulster Executive want to highlight that a competitive event which is organised at the weekend and is not compliant with the Cycling Ireland Technical Regulations will not be covered by insurance. Cycling Ulster will continue to be vigilant to ensure that our members are not put at risk by taking part in events that are not covered by insurance.”

The specific rule in relation to when “club and league races” are permitted can be seen below.

“Club and League races may only be run on Mondays through Thursdays. Notwithstanding League Races may be run at any time subject to these being promoted for a defined group of riders e.g. masters, women, time trialists etc . Such events must be authorised at the time of the annual calendar approval and be listed in the Annual Road Events Calendar.”
