Have you heard of the Accredited Marshal Scheme?

Ahead of the new cycling season, more courses are being held for those volunteers who are current Cycling Ireland members and wish to gain accredited marshal status.

The aim of the Accredited Marshal Scheme is to provide a safe, sustainable and effective method of traffic management at road race events.

Sixty further places are being made available in 2024.

An accredited marshal isΒ a someone who has been trained to use the ‘Stop!Β Cycle Race’ sign to legally stop and hold traffic to allow the safe passage of a cycle race on the open highway.

Legislation was introduced in Northern Ireland in 2022 meaning that accredited marshals have the legal right to stop traffic at a cycling event taking place on open roads.

Volunteers who complete the accredited marshal course will also benefit from having event management and health and safety training.
