The racing season for Ulster’s Women kicks of this weekend with a double bill of racing in County Down

First Up on Saturday Morning 8th May the women are racing for the Mc Kinley Contracts Shield as part of Newry Wheelers John Haldane Memorial Races. This race along the Carriageway from Newry to Warrenpoint is a super circuit and a great place to start racing.  Drew Mc Kinley and his team at Newry Wheelers always put on a good show so it would be great to see plenty of women supporting this race. Good support for the race will also send out a positive message to other clubs thinking of hosting a women’s race.

With a 9am start the women will race three laps of the circuit with a total race distance of 29 Miles.

This race will be the first race of the 2021 Cycling Ulster Women’s League of which further details will be published later.  The Ulster Women’s Commission are currently working with clubs to secure further races for the league.

Riders ranked W2 and W3 can participate in the Ulster League.

On Sunday racing move round the County Down Coast to the closed circuit at Bishopscourt where in partnership with the Ulster Youth Commission and host Club Phoenix CC, the Ulster Women’s Commission have planned a training event followed by a test race.  The training session for those who haven’t raced or have limited experience will kick off at 11am with a test race starting at 12 Noon.  The test race will be 40 Minutes and two lap duration.   The beginners group will be given an advantage from the more experienced cyclists when the race commences.

The circuit at Bishopscourt provides an excellent venue for anyone new to racing as being a closed circuit there is no traffic so it’s a great opportunity to give racing a go.

Working with the Youth Commission the Women’s Commission are planning a series of closed circuit races at Bishopscourt and other venues to be announced. Once we have the calendar completed we will publish a full list of all races.

Shaun Mc Bride Secretary of Ulster Women’s Commission is delighted with the weekend of action looming large

“This is a great start to the 2021 Season, Newry Wheelers are big supporters of Women’s racing so we were naturally delighted to include their race in our league, it’s always a great race.  On Sunday we start something new and exciting and it’s great to be able to work so close with our youth to provide different opportunities for women’s racing. All we need now is a good turnout of women who I have no doubt will deliver brilliant racing”
