Leisure Commission kicks off in Mullingar

As cycling participation in all its forms continues to grow throughout the island of Ireland, Cycling Ireland is responding to the need for representation for leisure cyclists through the formation of the Leisure Commission.

Leisure cycling covers all forms of non-competitive cycling, whether you’re a bun-runner, a serial sportive rider, a hybrid tootler, an Audax-aspirer, or someone who just simply likes to ride their bike to the shops or for fun.

The Commission aims to address issues relating to diversity, safety, and accessibility of Cycling Ireland events and programmes in order to promote leisure cycling as a lifelong activity for all and instil a sense of community through membership of Cycling Ireland.

The launch meeting was held in Mullingar on 3rd February, hosted by Dermot Anglin of Cycling Ireland and attended by twelve volunteers who make up the team of commissioners. The commissioners bring with them a breadth and depth of experience in road safety, event organisation, mental and physical health engagement, education, greenways development, disability engagement, environment and sustainability, and more.

Above all else, what all the commissioners bring to the table is a love for cycling and a desire to see the best interests of leisure cycling represented within the Cycling Ireland community and beyond.

Ciaran McKenna, President of Cycling Ireland, was present at the launch and says: “I’m absolutely delighted I could attend the Leisure Commission’s first meeting and meet the new members. Their breadth of knowledge and experience is extremely impressive and I have no doubt that the formation will ensure a solid representation of our leisure members meaning we can continue to flourish.”

The Commission’s next step will involve getting feedback from the whole Cycling Ireland community of existing leisure members, after which time an action plan will be compiled with short and long-term achievable targets agreed.
