YToS Weekend Overview:
A contingent of talented young Ulster riders journeyed to Scotland to compete in the prestigious Youth Tour of Scotland (YToS), facing off against top national competitors across a demanding three-stage event: a Time Trial (TT), a Road Race (RR), and a Town Centre Criterium (Crit). The weekend proved to be a significant experience for all involved, with Ulster riders demonstrating impressive determination and skill in each discipline. A standout achievement was Emer Heverin’s remarkable performance, securing 3rd overall in the U16 Girls’ General Classification (GC).
Stage-by-Stage Performance:
Time Trial (TT):
The opening Time Trial saw all Ulster riders deliver solid and well-paced efforts, providing a foundation for their overall ambitions in the general classification.
Road Race (RR):
- U16 Boys: The U16 Boys’ race was characterised by aggressive racing, with both Caleb McGreevy and Josh McClune actively positioned near the front of the peloton throughout the demanding event.
- U16 Girls: In a similarly dynamic race, Emer Heverin and Aoife Craig both rode intelligently within the lead group, demonstrating their strength and tactical awareness to finish strongly.
- U14 Category (Dylan Finnegan, Olly Millar, Rory McCool, Kealan Doherty, Sean Heverin, Ava Baker): Both the Boys’ and Girls’ U14 Road Races were challenging and unfortunately involved crashes affecting some Ulster riders, all of whom thankfully were reported to be okay. In a competitive finish, Ava Baker secured a commendable 6th place, with Dylan Finnegan finishing strongly in 10th.
Town Centre Criterium (Crit):
- U14 Girls (Ava Baker): Ava Baker delivered a strong performance in the final Criterium stage, contributing to her overall 7th place in the General Classification (GC).
- U14 Boys (Dylan Finnegan, Olly Millar, Rory McCool, Kealan Doherty, Sean Heverin): In a fast-paced and tactical race, Dylan Finnegan’s consistent efforts throughout the weekend culminated in a top 20 finish in the GC.
- U16 Girls (Aoife Craig, Emer Heverin): The U16 Girls’ Criterium was a highlight, with Emer Heverin sprinting to an impressive 3rd place on the stage, solidifying her 3rd place overall in the General Classification (GC). Aoife Craig also rode strongly, finishing 21st in the GC.
- U16 Boys (Josh McClune, Caleb McGreevy): In a very fast-paced crit, Josh McClune delivered an exceptional ride to finish 5th on the stage, securing 15th overall in the GC. Caleb McGreevy also backed up his strong weekend with a solid performance, finishing 16th on the GC.
Overall Conclusion:
The Youth Tour of Scotland provided a valuable experience for the young Ulster riders, offering them the opportunity to compete against top national talent and further develop their skills. Emer Heverin’s podium finish was a significant achievement, and all riders demonstrated commendable grit and determination throughout the weekend.
