Cycling Ulster Women’s Commission Celebrates Another Successful Big Day Out!

On the 21st of September, the Cycling Ulster Women’s Commission held this year’s highly anticipated Big Day Out at the stunning Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. Now in its third year, the event continues to go from strength to strength, with participation numbers increasing once again.

Nearly 100 women from across the province came together to take part in this special event, which celebrates women in cycling and promotes inclusivity in the sport. Participants had the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of cycling activities, including Road, MTB, Gravel, and Community Bike Rides. The day wasn’t just about riding though—women also took the lead by volunteering, coaching, and hosting workshops, making the event a real community effort.

Erin Creighton, a member of the National Track team and bound for the Paris 2024 Olympics, was a special guest on the day. She joined the Spelga Road Ride, where participants had the unique opportunity to ride alongside an elite athlete. Erin stayed on throughout the afternoon, enthusiastically answering questions and sharing insights about her journey to the Olympic stage. Her presence added inspiration and motivation for all who attended.

The road cycling groups were expertly led by a dedicated team of volunteers, many of whom were returning Ride Leaders. Special thanks go to Gary McKeegan, Cycling Ulster’s Development Officer, and Stuart Balfour, Youth Development Officer, who both led groups and supported with afternoon workshops.

For those more interested in off-road adventures, the event offered three levels of mountain biking. This part of the day was led by experienced coaches Aisling Cullen, Tommy Mag, and Ian Bailey, who ensured that riders of all abilities could participate and improve their skills while tackling the trails of Tollymore.

After a morning of riding, everyone gathered for a well-deserved lunch. It was a chance to rest, refuel, and connect with other participants, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

The afternoon featured a range of workshops, covering various aspects of cycling, from skill-building to discussions on how to increase women’s participation in the sport. These workshops provided valuable learning opportunities for both beginners and more experienced riders, offering practical advice and fostering further engagement with the cycling community.

A special thanks goes out to the many sponsors who generously donated prizes for the event’s raffle. The raffle raised £600 in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, a charity that helps families bring home loved ones who have died abroad. The support from sponsors and participants alike made this fundraising effort a huge success and added another meaningful dimension to the event.

The day was a resounding success, with participants and organisers alike celebrating the positive energy and progress made in promoting women’s cycling.

Cycling Ulster Chair, Tommy McCague, praised the efforts of everyone involved:
“Delighted to see the Big Day Out back for year three, and it continues to grow. Huge thanks to the Women’s Commission and everyone involved in making it a huge success. Women are underrepresented in our sport, and events like this help support participation and introduce women into the sport, who may otherwise not have been involved. I look forward to seeing more opportunities and events for women within the province.”

This year’s success would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the organising committee. Their tireless efforts ensured every detail was carefully planned, from the rides to the workshops, making the day a memorable experience for all involved. A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the event’s organisation and execution, as well as the volunteers, coaches, and leaders who gave their time and expertise.

The Big Day Out is not only a day to celebrate women in cycling but also a key driver in helping increase female participation in a traditionally male-dominated sport. By providing a supportive and welcoming environment, the Cycling Ulster Women’s Commission continues to break down barriers and inspire more women to take part in cycling, regardless of their experience level.

The Women’s Commission would like to say a BIG THANKS to everyone who volunteered their time on the day.
