Stuart Balfour Appointed As Youth Development Officer for Ulster
Cycling Ireland is delighted to announce the appointment of Stuart Balfour as Youth Development Officer for Ulster.
He will be responsible for supporting and increasing Cycling Ireland youth membership and youth/junior participation in Ulster. The purpose of the role will be to work in partnership with the Cycling Ireland Youth Commission; Cycling Ulster and affiliated cycling clubs within Ulster to drive participation in youth cycling activities, initiatives, and events.
The former pro-cyclist brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, he previously held the position of Club Development Officer with Scottish Cycling.
During his time with Scottish Cycling, Balfour was heavily involved in various projects aimed at enhancing the cycling community, collaborating with stakeholders, including volunteers, coaches, schools, and parents, to identify community needs and create opportunities for youth cyclists.
Notably, he championed the ‘Rock Up and Ride’, providing young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with access to cycling.
Balfour also played a crucial role in bringing back a national road race to the Southeast of Scotland.
He also completed a Combined STEM bachelor’s degree (Hons) focused on Sport and Exercise Science in Coaching and Sport Psychology at the Open University.
Applying skills learned from his studies, such as effective communication with athletes and coaches, psychological strategies, and sport-specific knowledge, Balfour manages his time efficiently to excel in both his career and studies.
A combination of his racing, coaching and development experience has him well placed to make a significant difference within Ulster.
Speaking about taking up the newly created role, Balfour said:
“I’m really looking forward to getting started in the new role with Cycling Ireland and getting to know everyone in the cycling community and settling into life over here. It’s been great meeting people already who are so keen about cycling in the area.
“I’m looking forward to bringing my knowledge as an ex pro and my time working in club development to help boost cycling in all disciplines in the Ulster.”
