Following the recent Cycling Ireland post outlining the Road Working Group’s findings, Cycling Ulster would like to update our members on the progress made.
We were represented at last night’s six-week review meeting by Tommy McCague and Mark Kavanagh and are encouraged by the developments.
We wish to advise clubs that, moving forward, there is no requirement for stand-alone C1 and C2 races at regional events. Promoters are encouraged to consider running a combined or handicapped C1/C2 race—at the organiser’s discretion—while continuing with a stand-alone C3 race format.
We ask all promoters to liaise with Mark Kavanagh regarding the scheduling of events. With multiple races taking place each weekend, it is clear that rider numbers are being stretched too thin to support them all.
We strongly encourage a “one race per weekend” approach within Ulster and are committed to working in collaboration with Leinster and Connacht to avoid local calendar clashes—for example, between events like Newry and Drogheda.
Additionally, we are keen to see Junior riders progress through the ranks to the C1 category to help bolster race numbers.
While we acknowledge there is still work to be done, we are pleased with the direction things are heading and remain committed to engaging with the working group and other provinces to deliver positive change for all involved.
Finally, we would like to sincerely thank the review group and their findings to date, as well as all our members who have engaged with us and shared their feedback.
We believe this marks a positive step toward further improvements in road racing.
