Omagh Wheelers are promoting ‘Leo’s Legacy Virtual Cycle Challenge’, a cycle in memory of club member, Leo McKenna who passed away on 6th December 2019 following many years battling cancer. Leo and his family received hugely important care from Marie Curie Cancer nurses during Leo’s final days. Leo’s Legacy aims to raise essential funds for the Marie Curie charity, which is now even more critical with the impact of the COVID pandemic on all charities. Leo’s daughter Siobhan added “in addition to raising much needed funds for Marie Curie, we also want everyone to join in and have a laugh. Daddy always enjoyed a bit of craic and banter with all the cyclists”.
Originally planned for 19th April 2020, the event was postponed due to COVID. Leo’s family have now decided to make the event virtual to provide the flexibility for everyone to take part, whilst still working within COVID restrictions.
2 Days/200 Miles/2 Ways – the virtual event now gives participants the flexibility to complete it across two days (Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November), with an aim to cover 200miles. Participants have two different ways to do it: online or on the road. And, participants can do the distance individually, or as a group using their combined distance to get the target (e.g. 5 riders do 40miles together).
Leo’s son Stephen is going to plan to ride 100miles each day on the virtual platform called Zwift. Anyone else who uses Zwift can join Stephen to show their support and raise much needed funds for an important cause. Zwift event details listed below. Stephen will also plan to use the Zoom app in parallel so that anyone can join in from home on their indoor trainer. Meanwhile, Leo’s daughter Siobhan and son Kieran will take to the roads with local club Omagh Wheelers and complete the 200miles as part of a small group-training ride. Other clubs around the country and also invited to use their local club training rides to join in and complete the challenge in support of the Marie Curie cancer charity. Participants are invited to take photos and post updates on the event Facebook page, with an aim of capturing the fun factor too.
Omagh Wheelers Chairperson Sean Kelly will also be planning a motorbike 200mile spin. To join in, contact Sean on 07864 535336.
