BMX riders from across Ulster gathered at Ormeau Park on Sunday 26th October, for the first BMX Rider Development Data Collection Day, an exciting step forward for the sport in Ireland.

Hosted by the BMX Commission in collaboration with Cycling Ireland and the Provincial Cycling Executives, the session marked the launch of a new BMX Rider Development Programme, designed to establish a clear performance pathway for riders nationwide.

Riders aged 12 and over took part in a series of core skill tests, including manuals, flat manuals, jumps, and balance exercises. The purpose of these sessions is to gather anonymous data to help set national performance benchmarks, key reference points that will guide future training and development opportunities within Irish BMX.

Importantly, this was not an assessment day. No names were recorded, and the data collected will be used solely to build a clearer picture of skill levels across age groups, ensuring the new pathway is both fair and representative.

While the older riders were busy contributing to this valuable research, younger BMXers aged 11 and under enjoyed a fun, skills-based coaching session led by local club coaches, a fantastic opportunity to learn new techniques and build confidence on the track.

Commission members Eugene and  Richie worked closely with local clubs, Cycling Ulster, and volunteers to ensure the day ran smoothly. Despite the chilly weather, there was a great turnout and a strong sense of community spirit throughout.

A huge thank you goes out to all the riders, parents, and volunteers who made the day possible- especially those who helped prepare the track and support the coaching sessions. Your involvement is helping to lay the groundwork for the next generation of BMX talent in Ireland.

This was the first of several data collection sessions to take place across the provinces in the coming weeks, each one playing an essential role in shaping the future of Irish BMX.
