Duncan Lifts Tommy Given Memorial
Northern CC’s Fraser Duncan ran out a worthy winner in today’s Tommy Given Memorial Road Race hosted by Maryland Wheelers at Hillsborough. The 60 strong field was despatched in two groups separated by 5 minutes but despite a determined effort from the vets and juniors, in particular Jim McConnell (East Antrim), Adam Armstrong (Northern) and Gordon Scott (Kings Moss), the scratchmen managed to pull back a minute per lap and caught the leaders after 45 miles of racing.
A group of 15 merged to contest the final two laps of the 9 mile circuit but the group fragmented with the very strong winds and in the closing miles Duncan, Alaister Steele (U/A) Gary Crory (Planet X) and Mark Greer (Maryland) surged clear.
Duncan crashed on the final climb just 2 miles from the finish but managed to remount and make his way back to the group before winning the sprint for the line.
Paul Mulligan (Crannog Ireland) came home alone in fifth position 43 seconds behind the leaders while Adam Armstrong (Northern) led home the remainder of the field at 1-29 for sixth and 1st Junior position.
