Irvine Superb In Tour of the Mournes
Martyn Irvine (Ards CC) and Paul Bloomer (Harps CC) were the heroes in today’s Tour of the Mournes promoted by Newry Wheelers. The duo attacked just 4 miles into the 65-mile race and although Bloomer faded in the final miles Irvine held on to win despite the pursuit of the 100 strong field.
The pair never gained more than a minute on the bunch and despite the blustery conditions they worked hard together as the race sped through Scarva, Banbridge, Rathfriland, Castlewellan and Hilltown. In the final 10 miles a group comprising Stephen McKenna (East Antrim), Adam Armstrong (Northern), Karl Dolan (Cuchullain), Brendan Graham (planet X) and Irish National Veteran champion Lennie Kirk (Slane Cycles) managed to make contact with Bloomer but 19-year-old Irvine kept clear to the finish in Newry coming home 40 seconds ahead of East Antrim’s McKenna.
Young Irvine will certainly be a name to look out for in the future. He now moves into the first category ranks having progressed from third category since the start of the season in March.
