Mc Cann Wins Island Wheelers/PJ Logan Cup
The difference between the paid ranks and the amateurs was evident today in the P.J. Logan Cup when Belfast professional David McCann, who competes for Team Giant Asia, romped home a clear winner.
The 90 strong field was despatched in two groups separated by 5 minutes but before the half way stage McCann and five other riders had managed to bridge the gap. A break which included McCann, Brendan Doherty (Planet X), Steven McKenna (East Antrim), Peter Hawkins (Castlerreagh), Paul Hanna (Total Cycling) and Richard Alhadeff (Orchard Wheelers) slipped off the front.
With 12 miles remaining McCann jumped away and stayed clear to the line. Peter Hawkins won the 2-up sprint for second place from Hanna one and a half minutes behind the winner.
Full marks must go to Island Wheelers , Cycling Ulster’s latest club, for promoting this inaugural event. The organisation of the race was superb – a tough course, well marshalled and refreshments for all at the end. The fact that, what is essentially a touring club, can promote such a superb racing event for all categories must make other clubs look to their laurels. Well done Island Wheelers.
Ann Mc Farland was the only women competitor and managed to stay with the men for much of the race until forced to pull out in the last few laps.
It is also good to see PJ Logan remembered in this way. He did much to promote cycling in the area and would have enjoyed the specatacle today. Even the sun shone! Adrian Logan and members of PJ's family were at the finish line to see David take the victory. He presented the cup and said that he hoped the event would continue to be a success for many more years to come.
