Matthew Ward Takes Surgenor Cup On The Line

Phoenix CC’s Mathew Ward won today’s Surgenor Cup when he outsprinted breakaway companions Peter Hawkins (Castlereagh) and Brendan Doherty (Planet X).
This trio were part of an original break of eleven which escaped on the first of eight laps of the tough circuit at Randalstown. Included in the break was Belfast professional David McCann (Team Giant Asia) along with Simon Thompson (Maryland), Ballymena trio Tommy Wilson, Liam Nelson and Sean Wright, Barry Mullen (Phoenix), Martyn Irvine (Ards) and Paul Mulligan (Crannog Ireland).

This group built up an unassailable lead and were 3 minutes clear of the main field by the halfway stage. The climb at Kilnock took its toll and a number of riders fell back to the main group.
With 3 laps remaining McCann was involved in an accident leaving six riders to fight it out for the final honours.

Doherty, Hawkins and Ward attacked 12 miles from the finish and managed to stay clear to the line.

Martyn Irvine led home the remainder of the break for 4th place ahead of Tommy Wilson and Paul Mulligan. Gordon Scott (Kings Moss), Fraser Duncan (Northern) and Adam Armstrong (Northern) managed to escape in the closing miles to claim the minor placings whilst John Scott (Orchard Wheelers) led home the main bunch for 10th place over 7 minutes down on the winning group.
