Lennie takes Aghagallon Cup By A Whisker

Lennie - The Lion King

Perfect handicapping saw the Aghagallon Cup come down to a massive bunch sprint at Bartins Bay today. The 80 strong field was despatched in two groups separated by 5 minutes. For most of the race it loked as if the first group would stay away and they kept the pace high.

It wasn’t until the last of the 17 laps that the groups merged resulting in a huge bunch sprint. On the penultimate lap the gap had closed to 26 seconds and the excited crowd were already naming their winners. Both Lennie Kirk and Alan Hall were in the frame as both are noted sprinters and can never be discounted when it comes down to the wire. Veteran Lenny Kirk (Slane Cycles) proved fastest in the sprint for the line taking it just ahead of Alan Hall (Apollo).

Simon Williams (Orchard Wheelers) took third place. This was a terrific ride for the young Orchard Wheelers rider in his first senior year. He had already shown he was made of stern stuff with his three excellent stages of the Tour of the North.

The Aghagallon Cup was promoted by Clann Eireann who turned out in force to marshall, commentate and generally run an excellent race. Not to mention the Clann riders who turned out to cheer on young Erin Turkington and wish her well for the Tour ta Malta next week.
