Cyclocross Academy Report

Today Apollo CT ran a highly successful mtb academy at the Watersports Centre in Craigavon. The focus of the day was on cyclocross racing, which has become increasingly popular in Ulster over the past number of years, due in no small part to the great work of the promoting clubs. Despite the very inclement weather a good crowd of hardy souls turned out for the training day with some as young as nine. While regular cyclocross participants registered for the day it was heartening to see quite few newcomers who had little or no experience of this part of the sport.

The early part of the day concentrated on the basics: correct clothing, nutrition, bike position and race technique and tactics. The lectures were given by Allister MacSorley, Roger Aikan and Aidan McDonald. Allister is currently completing a degree in Sports Psychology and his power points were both informative and lighthearted. Organiser of the day, Fred MacSorley said he was pleased with the turnout and paid tribute to the lecturers. "I am also pleased that Roger could take the time out to pass on some of his expert knowledge. He is only recently returned from the World Championships but had no hesitation in helping out today. It is great to see riders putting something back into the sport."

There were lively question and answer sessions following each talk while discussions continued at the tea break where the famous Macsorley tray bakes were quickly consumed.

Following lunch, the participants were taken out for some practical demonstrations which included dismounting and remounting techniques, carrying the bike and negotiating obstacles. This was followed by a run along the trails around the lakes. All in all it was a very worthwhile day and everyone both learned new information and had a good day out.

NB : Don't forget the first of the cyclocross events gets underway tomorrow, Sunday, at Waves Leisure Complex Lurgan, promoted by Apollo CT. There is racing for all ages from U8 up.See previous story for full details.

Testimonial And Additional Pics by Dany Blondeel

The course was very interesting for any kind of "of road racing" and well presented by the tutors on the day(Allister, Roger, Aiden, and gentleman Fred). Even it was a cyclo-cross class, it was of benefit all kinds of road racing. My grandson loved it and it has given me advise now on how to look after him. The practical in the afternoon was a wet one, but gave the students(young and old) a chance to train with big superstars like Roger Aiken and Allister MacSorley.

We have to thank Apollo Racing team and Craigavon Council for the efforts do realise this classes. Also the tutors to give their time to this venture, only good can come from this. Even I learned a great deal more about the sport. Also a thanks to Cycling Ulster for sponsoring this event and even taking the time to visit us (Marian&Tommy)
See you soon ,
Dany Blondeel and grandson Matthew.
