McCann Books His Flight to Canada

David McCann (Team Endurosport) booked his place on the Irish squad to compete in the World Cycling Championships with an emphatic win at Ballyboughill on Saturday. The double Olympian, who began his career with Belfast’s Phoenix CC, stormed his way around the 40k time trial course in a time of 51 mins 38 secs. In what was expected to be a close contest, McCann beat his nearest rival David O’Loughlin by almost a minute and finished over four minutes clear of Banbridge’s Tommy Evans one of the favourites for the event.
The event was not without controversy with a number of competitors including O'Loughlin being allowed to ride with non-safety aero helmets. This was despite the fact that all the testers were informed that rhese helmets were not permissable in this event. A few questions need to be answered here.
The current World TT Champion is Columbian professional Santiago Botero, who beat Lance Armstrong in the first time trial in the 2002 Tour de France. It will be interesting to see how McCann fares against such illustrious competition,

In the ladies qualifier Belfast’s Cheryl Fisher (Phoenix) fimished 3rd with former World Champion rower Sinead Jennings winning the sole ladies slot on the Ireland team. A newcomer to the sport of cycling, Cheryl will be a name to look out for in the future.
