Duncan Makes It Two In a Row
It was double celebrations this weekend for Northern CC’s Fraser Duncan. The 21-year- old was a worthy winner of the 60 mile Tommy Givan Memorial road race at Hillsborough on Saturday and he capped this off with a victory today in the Emyvale Credit Union Grand Prix.
At Emyvale a group of nine riders escaped on the first of 4 laps of a 15-mile circuit and built up a lead of over a minute on the rest of the field. The break contained a number of strong riders including East Antrim pair Willie Hamilton and Stephen McKenna, Phoenix CC’s Matthew Ward, Tommy Wilson (Ballymena), Mark Greer (Maryland) and Crannog Ireland’s Paul Mulligan.
However in the closing miles strong riding from Duncan and team-mate Adam Armstrong brought the leaders back and it all came down to a massive bunch sprint with Duncan getting the verdict over John Bann-Lavery (Clann Eireann) and Davy McCall (Maryland Wheelers).
In the supporting B race Phoenix CC’s Micky Orr showed he had lost none of his old sprinting craft when he lead in another bunch sprint ahead of Gary Nugent (Classic Walls) and Paul Hanna (Total Cycling).
The combined veteran and junior event was won by Apollo’s David Mulholland who edged out breakaway companion Jim McConnell (East Antrim) on the line with Simon Williams (Orchard Wheelers) taking third some 22 seconds later.
