The Department for Infrastructure have responded to Cycling Ulster’s request that the condition and repair of roads in the province be considered an urgent matter by stating that they plan to increase the investment in resurfacing over the next financial year.
Cycling Ulster have welcomed this positive response. Vice Chairman, Tommy McCague said:
“We are encouraged by the response from the Permanent Secretary, Peter May who has said that they plan to increase investment in resurfacing over the next year and are developing plans to overcome the backlog in relation to the maintenance of the roads which we all know exists.
“Hopefully we will see an improvement in the road conditions over the coming months, Cycling Ulster will remain vigilant on this matter however as the safety of road cyclists is of major importance to us as an organisation.
“There are enough hazards faced by cyclists on the roads without having to deal with an added one of roads not being properly maintained which can lead to cyclists having to manoeuvre around defects which makes them more vulnerable to accidents with passing motorists.”
