Noel Hammond Memorial 11/5/03
The Noel & Kieran Hammond Memorial Races were held in Ballyboughal (North County Dublin) today writes Kay Howard. The Senior Race held over a distance of 80 miles, in very windy and showery conditions, attracted a field of just over 100 riders.
On the long ascent of the Nags Head Climb on lap 3, seven riders, Brian Kenneally from Carrick Cidona CC, Denis Easton , Totalcycling.com, Joe Fenlon, Carrick Cidona CC, Paddy Moriarty, Dublin Skip Les Jeunes, Paul Griffin, Earl of Desmond CC, Shane Baker from Usher Irish Road Club and Scott McDonald from Orwell CC broke clear, quickly building up a lead of over a minute on the main field. As the leading break approached the Naul Village on the 4th lap, Brian Kenneally punctured, leaving the 6 remaining riders out in front.
On the climb, with 2 laps to go, Griffin lost contact and a few miles later Scott McDonald also dropped off, leaving 4 riders out in front.
This leading break stretched their lead over the chasing group and in a thrilling finish Denis Easton from the Totalcycling.com team in Belfast won by the narrowest possible margin from Joe Fenlon from Carrick Cidona CC. The finish was so close, both riders had to wait for the results of the photo-finish camera to determine who actually got the verdict.
