Seymour Lifts All Ireland Title for 16th Time/MTB Pics now added
It was a battle of youth over experience in the All Ireland Cyclocross Championships held on Sunday in Lurgan Park, hosted by Apollo CT. As expected it was Seymour (Team WORC) and Conor McConvey (McConvey Cycles/FELT International) who went from the gun, opening up a clear lead over the rest of the field.
Without Banbridge CC’s Roger Aiken to add further spice it was these two who dominated the event. The course was longer than in previous years but and fast flowing. The winter sunshine provided bright dry conditions and a host of spectators. The riders covered seven laps of the course with the two favourites glued together throughout. By the fifth lap it looked as if Seymour was beginning to tire and McConvey took the lead going through the water sections gaining a couple of seconds over Seymour. However experience showed in the final 100 metres when Seymour kicked into action and sprinted to victory. This gives him his 16th All Ireland title with Roger Aiken the only rider to have beaten him in past seventeen All Ireland Championships.
Newry’s Conor Campbell showed his worth by taking the bronze medal position, testament to how this rider has progressed in recent years. Richie Felle of Team WORC came in to take fourth although he had suffered technical problems in the final lap and may have lost out to Campbell because of this. The Junior title went to Paul O’Reilly (IMBRC) when he came in fifth while Glen Kinning of Castlereagh was sixth. This was a great ride by Kinning who had earlier competed in and won the mountain bike event.
Aidan McDonald of the promoting club took a well deserved seventh position while Francine Meehan of Tullamore scooped the Women’s title. The team prize went to Team WORC. Fourteen year old Cormac Clarke of Newry Wheelers proved once again that he is a rider to watch as he took the bronze medal as third placed Junior.
Congratulations must go to Apollo CT who pulled out all the stops and promoted a very well run event. There were marshalls everywhere and it was good to see a club pulling together to ensure all the safety measures were in place and soup and sandwiches on offer after the event. Apollo CT would like to thank all those who turned out to help before and during the event. It was very much appreciated by the organisers.
As well as the championship event there were also supporting events for Youth and mountain bikers. It was one of the best turn outs in recent years and everyone enjoyed their day out. The BBC cameras were also on the scene throughout the day.
